Open Access Information and Policy


Publishing open access makes your work immediately and permanently available online for everyone, worldwide. ISCI is pleased to offer a variety of open access options for our authors to publish their research.

No matter which option you choose, all open access publications are subject to high-quality peer review, editorial and production processes. You retain copyright and can easily comply with open access mandates.

Identification of open access articles

Open access articles can be identified as open access in the article PDF, HTML and in the article metadata. They are also clearly labeled on SpringerLink using the orange open access button.

New functionality on SpringerLink! You can now easily access a list of all Open Choice articles published in a specific journal. Simply go to the journal page on SpringerLink and click on the “View Open Access Articles” button under “Browse all Content”.

Copyright and open access license

If authors choose open access in the Springer Open Choice program, the copyright remains with them, the authors of the article.

As of January 2012, the majority of Springer’s Open Choice eligible journals publish open access articles under the liberal Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY) license. The CC BY license permits unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided you give appropriate credit to the original author(s) and the source, provide a link to the Creative Commons license, and indicate if changes were made.

A limited number of journals continue to use the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC) license, including those published under our Adis imprint.

How to order Open Choice

You can decide to publish your article with open access during the MyPublication process. Once your article has been accepted for publication, you will receive an email from Springer with a link to your MyPublication pages. In these pages you can choose for your article to be published with open access.

Publication fee

Publishing Open Choice involves an open access publication fee of US$ 3000/EUR 2200 (excl. VAT). You can choose to pay by credit card or to receive an invoice.

The open access publication fee does not replace any existing journal policies publication costs to be paid by the author, which are billed separately (e.g. surcharges for color in print, oversized articles, etc.)

Customers providing payment from the Americas will be charged in US$ sales tax will be charged if applicable. Customers providing payment from Europe, Africa, and Asia will be charged in EUR. VAT is not included in the price and will be added, at a standard rate, if applicable.

*Please note
  • Open Choice articles are not part of our Open Access membership program. Articles published in Springer’s subscription-based journals using the Open Choice option are not covered by your institution’s membership.
  • Visit our open access funding page to find out how the open access publication charge can be covered.
  • The final published version will become freely available on PMC/Europe PMC, the full-text archive of scientific literature in the biomedical and life sciences, if the respective journal is on the PMC Journal List.
  • Open Choice articles are not covered by the SpringerOpen waiver fund.
  • It is not possible to cancel the Open Choice order.
